Ptosis or “droopy eyelids” is a medical condition that can be corrected through Ptosis Eyelid Surgery. Ptosis is caused by weak elevator muscles, which is responsible for lifting the eyelid. Some people are born with naturally droopy eyelids, while others have saggy eyelids due to aging. This can not only cause a sleepier appearance but can also partially obstruct vision. In addition, people with ptosis have a tendency to keep their brows lifted to open their eyes, which can gradually cause wrinkles and headaches. Ptosis correction surgery is a reconstructive surgery at Line Plastic Surgery that can help alleviate some of these issues by tightening the eyelid muscles and create a less sleepy or tired appearance. Patients can pair ptosis repair with a blepharoplasty or Asian Double Eyelid surgery.

BEST CANDIDATES FOR PTOSIS REPAIR SURGERY

– Patients with the appearance of “droopy” eyelids that interfere with day-to-day life
– Patients with severe ptosis that obstructs their vision
– Patients that want to get ptosis correction combined with Asian double eyelid surgery for brighter, less sleepy eyes

CONSULTATION

Our doctors will first ask the patient about their specific goals for their ptosis correction, then check the movement of their eyes opening and closing. The goal is to check the severity of the ptosis during the in-person assessment, as well as understand the desired eye result. Our doctors will then give their assessment to the patient on treatment options and discuss how the surgical plan should be individualized for the patient.

SURGERY DETAILS

There are two different methods for performing the ptosis correction procedure, both of which are usually performed under local anesthesia in about an hour. In the first of these methods, the surgical method, our doctors will make a full or partial incision along the upper eyelid and remove excess fat and skin. The levator muscle will be connected to the bottom of the incision through stitches. In the non-incisional method, small holes are made instead of an incision along the upper eyelid. Stitches will then be made through the skin to tighten the levator muscle.

RECOVERY & POST OPERATION

– Apply ice packs for the first 72 hours to the operations site with 20 minutes intervals (20 mins on 20 mins off).
– Elevate your head and shoulders up on 2 or more pillows for the first week.
– Use any prescribed antibiotic eye drops for 1 weeks or according to doctor’s order.
– Pain after surgery is usually mild. Take pain killers like Tylenol. Severe pain should be reported immediately.
– If needed, the estimated schedule to remove stitches is 1 week after surgery.
– Gently clean incisions with moistened Q-tips or gauze. Red, elevated or bumpy incision can be observed in the weeks after surgery and usually subside within 2 weeks. Scars will fade and soften for about 6 months or more. Itching is common.
– Any tight feeling or eyelash numbness will disappear over several months. Full healing of any incision can take 6 to 9 months or more.
– Avoid wearing contact lenses for the first 1 week after surgery.

FROM OUR DOCTORS

“Ptosis refers to the drooping of the upper eyelids, caused by a weakened eyelid muscle. Ptosis can be under recognized in Asian patients, especially in those with sagging upper eyelid skin. Ptosis repair strengthens the eyelid muscle and allows the eyes to open wider, and this should be addressed for an ideal outcome. I recommend a non-incisional ptosis correction for those with mild to moderate ptosis, and an incisional method for those with severe ptosis.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What will my Ptosis Surgery results be like?

Immediately after surgery, the position of your upper eyelid may appear to be higher or lower than expected, but over a period of 1-2 months, it will reach its final position. For best results, patients should apply cold compresses for about 2 days to prevent swelling, avoid contact lenses, and avoid vigorous activities for at least 6 weeks.

How long does Ptosis Surgery take?

Ptosis surgery is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Our doctors prefer to do the procedure under local so they can interact with the patient to verify the shape and position of the crease and eyelid during surgery. The procedure takes about 1 hour and involves sutures.

Are there any Ptosis Surgery risks?

Fortunately, most of the major risks of ptosis revision surgery are minor or fairly infrequent. In rare cases, some patients may need additional surgery to refine the eyelid position after surgery. Booking your ptosis surgery with a board-certified oculoplastic or plastic surgeon at LINE Plastic Surgery will ensure you have the best quality, long-lasting results.
