Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures performed by our doctors at Line Plastic Surgery Center. Women may choose to undergo breast augmentation because of under-developed breasts, differences in breast size (breast asymmetry), or changes after pregnancy or breastfeeding. In addition, weight loss and aging may change a woman’s breast volume and shape. Breast augmentation can be performed with either saline or silicone implants and in conjunction with a breast lift if needed.

Breast augmentation can be performed using several incision options, each with its own advantages and considerations. The choice depends on factors such as implant type, size, surgeon preference, and patient anatomy or scarring concerns.

1. Inframammary Incision (Under the Breast)

Location: In the fold beneath the breast (inframammary crease).
Pros:

  • Provides direct access to the breast pocket → precise implant placement.
  • Works well for both saline and silicone implants.
  • Incision is hidden in the natural crease.
  • Lower risk of contamination (compared to periareolar).

Cons:

  • Visible when lying down or if the breast is lifted.
  • May be less ideal if the patient’s natural fold is poorly defined.

Scar: ~3–5 cm along the breast fold.

2. Periareolar Incision (Around the Nipple)

Location: Along the lower edge of the areola (where the darker skin meets lighter skin).
Pros:

  • Scar blends well with natural color transition.
  • Allows good access for implant placement.

Cons:

  • Slightly higher risk of changes in nipple sensation.
  • Possible increased infection risk (since incision passes through glandular tissue).
  • May not be suitable for larger silicone implants.

Scar: Semicircular, along the lower half of the areola.

3. Transaxillary Incision (Through the Armpit)

Location: In the natural crease of the armpit.
Pros:

  • No scar on the breast itself.
  • Good cosmetic choice for those prone to breast scarring.

Cons:

  • Technically more challenging.
  • Limited access for precise placement, especially for silicone implants.
  • Revision surgery typically requires a different incision site.

Scar: Hidden in the armpit.

4. Transumbilical Incision (Through the Belly Button, TUBA)

Location: Through the navel, tunnelled up to the breast.
Pros:

  • No visible scar on breast or armpit.

Cons:

  • Only suitable for saline implants (filled after insertion).
  • Technically demanding, less common.
  • Difficult to perform corrections or future revisions.

Scar: Inside the belly button.

CONSULTATION

During the consultation, our doctors discuss reasons the patients want to have breast augmentation and what their goals are for the surgery. We will also take careful measurements of the dimensions of the patient’s current breasts to aid in the selection of implant(s). Next, our doctors will take a complete medical history, including existing medical conditions, past surgeries, tobacco usage, daily medications, supplements, and allergies. For patients over 40, our doctors will need to see recent mammogram results.

After giving a thorough examination, our doctors will work with the patient to create a surgical plan and determine the size and type of implant(s) that will best fit the patient’s body. Patients can choose between saline or silicone breast implants. Both are very safe and have been rigorously tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Currently, the FDA allows silicone and saline implants in patients of any age. About 90% of our patients tend to choose silicone because it feels more natural and the other 10% choose saline because it is slightly cheaper.

SURGERY DETAILS

The procedure usually takes about 1-2 hours to complete. Our doctors make a small, thin incision either inframammary fold (crease underneath the breast), periareolar (along the areola), or transaxillary (armpit) and then form a pocket under the pectoralis muscle for the breast implant. During the surgery, our doctors put a temporary implant of the size the patient chose before the surgery and raise up the table to see if the implants look symmetrical. Then the doctors will lower the table back down, take out the temporary implant, wash out the area, and put in the breast implants. Finally, our doctors use a special skin closure technique with multiple layers of dissolvable stitches to give the patient the thinnest, most inconspicuous scar.

RECOVERY & POST OPERATION

– Immediately after the surgery, surgical dressings are applied along with a support bra to the chest to aid the patient’s recovery.
– Patients may feel stiff and sore in the chest region for about 5 days, but they should be able to walk on their own, which should be done often to promote blood circulation and prevent blood clots.
– Most patients can return to work and light activities in 3 – 7 days, but strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
– Patients must be careful and gentle with their breasts and attend all follow up appointments with our doctors.

FROM OUR DOCTORS

“A fantastic surgery that enhances the size and shape of the breasts and provides cleavage. The recovery is quick and there is minimum discomfort. The implants will be customized to your interests and desires.

– DR. RAHGOZAR

“Silicone implants are used to improve breast shape, size and balance. Research shows that female plastic surgeons tend to use differently sized and shaped implants for their patients, versus male surgeons.

As a female plastic surgeon, I choose implants that fit their goals and body shape of each patient. I use the most current, advanced techniques to achieve superior results and safety. Each patient’s body is different, and proper planning and discussion tailored to these specific needs is important. ”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1: What types of breast implants do you use?
We offer both saline and silicone implants, selected based on your goals, anatomy, and desired look. Each implant type has distinct advantages, and your surgeon will help you choose the most natural, balanced option for your body.
Q2: What incision techniques are available?
Incision placement is customized for minimal visibility and quick healing. Common options include inframammary (under the breast fold) and periareolar (along the edge of the nipple), depending on your anatomy and implant type.
Q3: How long does recovery take after breast augmentation?
Most patients return to light activity within 5–7 days and resume full activity after 3–4 weeks, depending on the procedure details and implant placement.
Q4: Are the procedures performed in an accredited facility?
Yes. All surgeries are performed in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite under board-certified anesthesia care, meeting national safety and sterilization standards.
Q5: How natural will my results look and feel?
We specialize in natural, balanced enhancement — emphasizing proportion and soft-tissue harmony rather than size alone. Our approach follows K-beauty-inspired precision with advanced implant shaping for natural movement.
Q6: What is your policy on revisions or adjustments?
Revision rates are extremely low, but if an adjustment is needed, your surgeon will discuss timing, healing, and cost coverage during your consultation.
